escaping high speed particles with a negative charged grid?

An experiment was carried out giving the D+ ions and the electrons an
initial speed up to 5E-6 m/s. In this experiment can be seen that the fastest D+ ions escape in the vertical directions and hit mainly the negative charged spheres. So it seems not making any sense to place the negative charged grid as displayed in figure 1.
